Supported by intergenerational mentorship, cross-sector collaboration and local engagement, NXTHVN accelerates the careers of the next generation and fosters retention of professional art talent while helping catalyze New Haven into a world-class, sustainable arts community.
NXTHVN Art Gallery Pop-Up at 59 Crown Street
NXTHVN presents 456 Prestissimo, a pop-up exhibition of Studio Fellow alumni and current residents: Anindita Dutta (cohort 04), Fidelis Joseph (cohort 05), and Napoles Marty (cohort 06).
Titled after an extremely fast tempo, this presentation of artworks looks at the swift movement of the body through abstraction. Included artworks explore the abstract visual language of rapid, high-energy movements captured through a range of mediums from dry pastel and oil on canvas to reclaimed fabric sculptured into fragments of fleeting memories, experiences, and personal and collective histories. As the title eludes, this presentation came together in a flash and is only on view for a short period of time.

Night Market is excited to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month this May with a featured AAPI vendor and activity section of the Night Market!
Find Mahjong Haven in this area on your map (the George Street side of Orange Street), and learn this 19th-century Chinese game. Or just hang around, watch the games and listen to the calming CLACK CLACK of those tiles. PUNG!

Portrait Drawing & Vision Boarding with Erector Square Open Studios
Erector Square heads to the Ninth Square for the Night Market!
Watch Eric Marsh bring portraits to life in real time, add your own voice to a collaborative vision board centered on peace, joy, art, and community, and explore a curated sale of donated works from Erector Square artists. Every piece you take home directly supports community outreach and builds momentum for October’s Open Studio event.
Live Mural Painting with artist Michael DeAngelo
In 2020, the Town Green District/DowntownNHV Straight Up Art mural program funded multiple murals all around the Ninth Square, including artist Michael DeAngelo’s Color Balance featured for years at the Night Market Stage backdrop.
Visit the stage area on the corner of Crown & Orange Streets during the Night Market as he works live, reworking his 2020 work into something fresh for the neighborhood!

Pottery Demo with the New Haven Pottery Studio
Get ready for a live, nerve-wracking pottery demonstration the night of the Market! The New Haven Pottery Studio brings pottery wheel to exhibit the full process of wheel throwing in action. Visitors will watch a large vase be created from start to finish, assembling multiple thrown components into one striking, extra-tall piece.
This is a chance to see both the fundamentals of pottery and the excitement of working at a larger scale, where precision and timing really matter. Stop by to learn more about the craft, ask questions, sign up for a class, or browse a selection of finished handmade pieces available for purchase.
DIY Button-Making & Scratch Art Bookmarks with NHFPL
The New Haven Free Public Library returns with their most in-demand community activities!
Make a button using a selection of pre-printed designs or color a blank template. We'll bring the supplies, you bring your creativity! And scratch away the dark coating to reveal rainbow-colored designs! Finish your bookmark with a decorative tassel, beads, or both!
